Our commitment to supporting employees who are experiencing domestic abuse

We're proud to share that Berkshire Healthcare is now a member of the Employers Initiative on Domestic Abuse (EIDA), a network of over 1,700 employers working together to take action on domestic abuse.

Domestic abuse affects people of all genders, ages, ethnicities, and sexualities. It can have a profound impact not only on individuals but also on their families and colleagues.

Did you know?

  • 1 in 4 women and 1 in 6 men experience domestic abuse during their lifetime.
  • 242 domestic abuse-related deaths were recorded between April 2022 and March 2023.
  • When someone is experiencing domestic abuse, work might be their only safe place
  • The action taken by the employer can change and potentially save a person's life

As an employer, we have a responsibility to support any employee who has experienced or is experiencing domestic abuse. Becoming a member of EIDA means we will have access to the latest resources and information to help us best carry out this vital role.

What is domestic abuse?

Domestic abuse can affect anyone regardless of gender, age, ethnicity and sexuality. It can impact every aspect of someone's daily life, including work, and this impact is not just limited to the victim survivor but can affect the family and their work colleagues.

Domestic Abuse is all about one person trying to maintain power and control over another, whether those people are in or have been in an intimate relationship or are family members. They do this by a pattern of abusive behaviours towards the victim/survivor that works to maintain this control.

These behaviours do not need to be physical; they can be psychological, economic, controlling and coercive but usually are underpinned by violence or the threat of violence.
