October 2024 marked one year since we launched our Anti-Racism CommUNITY Forum - a collaborative space bringing together community leaders and organisations from across Berkshire, including Acre (Alliance for Cohesion and Racial Equality), Utilivu Women’s Group, Project Salama, Slough CVS, Samar Collective and Thames Valley Police. Over the past year, the forum has become a powerful force for positive change, meeting every two months to discuss key issues and working together to address racial disparities in access, experience and outcomes in health services.

The forum, created as part of our commitment to becoming an anti-racist organisation, has seen vibrant and productive discussions on topics that matter to our community. Since its first meeting, forum members have explored subjects including multi-faith education and engagement, the role of mental health services in community care, and the history and contributions of Windrush and South Asian communities.

Each discussion has added depth and insight to our understanding, shaping the steps we take towards building a more inclusive, compassionate and understanding healthcare environment.

A Safe Space for Community Voices

The forum is rooted in our dedication to listening, learning and taking action. It provides a safe, supportive environment where everyone can share their perspectives, experiences, and ideas.

We understand that addressing racism requires ongoing dialogue, reflection, and collaboration. By partnering with a diverse range of local organisations, we can better understand the challenges and develop effective strategies to improve health outcomes for all.

A Platform for Meaningful Change

This past year, forum members have discussed these important topics and helped guide tangible actions within our organisation. Their input has informed initiatives and helped shape our approach to issues like mental health detentions and faith education for healthcare staff, ensuring that our services are responsive to the needs of all Berkshire residents.

Karla Inniss, Head of Inclusion, OD and Organisation Experience, said, "The CommUNITY forum was created because our community said so. One year later, we are proud to see the positive impact of this collaborative effort. Together, we're making strides toward a healthcare environment that is genuinely inclusive and great for everyone.

"In the coming year, we look forward to expanding our discussions and welcoming even more voices to the table. We remain committed to prioritising the needs of our diverse community, and we're grateful for our forum members' insights, passion, and partnership."

We invite any Berkshire-based organisations, leaders, patients and carers who share a commitment to anti-racism to join us. By joining this forum, you will not only contribute to meaningful change but also forge valuable connections with like-minded peers.
